30th Anniversary Reader's Theater performance of:

"Iowa Stories:

The Vietnam Experience"

Complied & Written by:

Marilyn Shaw

Iowa Stories: The Vietnam Experience was written by University of Northern Iowa Communication professor, Marilyn Shaw. It was first produced at UNI in 1990. A one weekend event turned into a show that ran for 10 months and toured throughout the Midwest, culminating in a 4th of July performance at the Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C.

In 1994, the show was revived for one performance in Des Moines for Memorial Day weekend during a visit by one of the traveling Vietnam Wall Memorials. UNI saw another revival in 2000 for the 10th anniversary of IA Stories and the traveling Wall appearing in Cedar Falls, IA.

Cedar Rapids saw its first taste of Iowa Stories in 2008 when it was the first production of the short lived Theatre Cedar Rapids project, The Second Season. Once again, one weekend turned into an 8 month journey for the cast and crew that spanned the Iowa Cultural Corridor. After 7 performances, over $8,000 was raised for local Vietnam Veterans groups.

RHCR Theatre 1st staged Iowa Stories in 2015 in conjunction with the Veterans Memorial Commission  & the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. For this incarnation, writer Shaw expanded her original script from nine to eighteen characters. Each part was double-cast with a “young” version depicting memories and an “older” version representing the Veteran in present day.

RHCR Theatre is once again honored to bring this amazing show back, this time for the 1st virtual staging! Cast members from the 1994, 2008, & 2015 productions will be returning to reprise their roles in a show that will premiere on the RHCR Theater YouTube channel at 7:00 PM on May 29th!
